Residents in the centre of Whitby have started a clean up operation but fear they will have to do it all over again as more flooding is predicted with an early morning high tide on its way on Friday.
Church Street and Pier Road were cordoned off as flood levels rose and Whitby Community College was being used as an overnight base for residents in need. Sainsbury’s was offering tea and coffees to police and fire officers who have been working through the day and into the night as temperatures also plummet.
Cars have been abandoned in the Co-op car park, Tin Ghaut and the Church Street car park. Motorists were unable to even get back to their vehicles, some of which were also submerged.
One eye witness told the Gazette that it would be happening all over again in the morning.
