THE MISS Scarborough and District crown is up for grabs once again, could you be the first to bring it to Whitby?
The event will take place in a glittering awards ceremony at the Spa Ocean Room on May 15.
Katie Botham (23) was the first entrant from Whitby to put her name down for the competition.
She said: “I don’t think Whitby gets as much recognition as it should and I think it should be highlighted more.
“If I did win I would request that I could have a Miss Whitby sash.
“Whitby lives in Scarborough’s shadow so it would be nice if Whitby could get some recognition.”
The competition is open to girls aged 17-24 with a YO postcode and all entrants will go through to the regional heat in April. Successful entrants will then be shortlisted for the final.
New organiser, Diane Yalezo, owner of prom dress shop Desire in Filey, hopes to build the event’s reputation and is urging girls to get their entries in.
She said: “I’m hoping to see a lot of new faces and I hope the girls from last year will come back and enter.
“Rachael Cooper who won in 2008 was actually a runner-up the previous year, so my advice to the girls that entered last year and didn’t win, is don’t give up this year!
“It’s a great opportunity for girls to enter the competition; the winner automatically goes through to the grand final of Miss England, and if they win that they go through to Miss World.
“It’s a really good event and this year is going to be bigger and better!
“We’re taking it back to the Spa Ocean room, there’ll be a disco after the event, it should be a highlight evening of the year.”
Diane was a close friend of Vivienne Lee who revived the competition in 2008 but sadly died in 2009.
Diane added: “I was a good friend of Vivienne Lee, so it’s nice to be able to continue this on behalf of her.
“I’m hoping this competition will now go from strength to strength, like it was when Vivenne ran it.”
