Whitby Seafoods landed a coveted award at the AGM of national charity, the Fishermen’s Mission.

The firm, based at Fairfield Way, were presented with the Corporate Champions Awards and were praised by the mission for “never failing to get behind us.”

It was one of the accolades handed out on the night at London’s Trinity House.

Edward Whittle, Whitby Seafoods’ business development director, travelled to the capital with his brother Daniel, saying they were “very honoured” to receive the award.

At the event, they met Jack Stein, son of TV chef Rick Stein, who is a patron of the charity.

“It was very nice to speak to him and he stocks Whitby scampi in Cornwall,” he said.

Mr Whittle spoke highly of the charity work carried out by the Fishermen’s Mission – which provides hardship grants to those in the industry – and said they do a lot to support some of the ex-fishermen of Whitby.

“We try to do what we can to support them because it is such an important charity,” he said.

Alison Godfrey, Director of Fundraising for the Fishermen’s Mission, said: “Anyone who enjoys a good plate of scampi will be familiar with the name of Whitby Seafoods and particularly, their Whitby Scampi which can be found on many a pub and restaurant menu.

“For many years we have been supported by the company and its staff.

“Never failing to be behind us in our work in the area, our logo can also be found on some of the product packaging, and they have organised and taken part in a number of events and have used our Christmas cards to send to their customers.

“As the largest manufacturer of scampi in the Britain, such high profile support within the industry is invaluable to us and we look forward to working with everyone connected with this truly family firm for many years to come.”

The company has agreed to organise this year’s charity golf event on July 1, at Whitby Golf Club. Teams of four can enter the event at a cost of £150 per team – this includes a two-course meal.
