A money management officer has been appointed in Whitby to help tackle increasing numbers of people falling into financial difficulty.

Yorkshire Coast Homes has created the extra post, which will cover Whitby and the surrounding area such as Castleton, Staithes and Fylingthorpe.

Kate Wilkinson, who lives in Whitby and used to be a legal cashier at Colin Brown and Kidson, has been in post for five weeks and is already working with families and individuals who usually end up needing help due to family separations, a death or health issues.

Over the next few weeks she will be working with the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, Sure Start groups and Whitby DAG for referrals.

Mel Tilley, housing services manager said: “There is a lot of community support in Whitby and a lot of financial issues are hidden. People get help from family but that means other people’s resources become stretched so there is a widening impact.

“Through rent collection there are issues arising and clients in the Whitby area would benefit from advice and budget setting. Tenant sustainability is what it’s about. If we are not collecting there is pressure on 4,000 other tenants. If we can keep tenants in their own homes it means we can keep costs down.”
