A 1940s Land Girl, the Joker and Wonder Woman all appeared at a hair and beauty competition last week, but it was a Whitby girl who stole the show.

40 hairdressing and beauty therapy students from Whitby Community College train at the Academy Hair and Beauty Training College based in Norton and Scarborough and WCC’s Carrie Ann Nicholson brushed away the competition to claim the student of the year prize.

Carrie Ann and two of her class mates, Eve Waring and Lucy Currell were also commended and will go through to the second round of competitions at Gateshead, where they compete for a place in the national finals.

Lindsay Burr MBE, academy director and three times finalist in the British Hairdressing Awards said: “Today’s competition work has been fantastic.

“This is a result of hours and weeks of hard work for the students and is a credit to all the teaching team. Competition work is a completely different discipline to the work produced in the salon and requires a huge amount of skill.”

The students competed for places in categories including classic 1940s, blow dry, bridal, body painting and evening style.
