President for this year’s Show Field event was Stephen Southgate, who was returning to the show after a four-year hiatus.

He said: “It’s a good thing for the community. Predominantly it’s the same people from the area and so it’s a time when people get together to enjoy the social side, not just to compete.”

For many people, including the show’s president, the agricultural show brings back fond memories of how village life used to be.

Mr Southgate explained: “It reminds me of memories of my past, my childhood. I lived within a mile and half of the Show Field until I was a teenager. In the ‘70s nearly all the local farmers had horses and bred off them, so there was competition and rivalry. In those days horses were the work machines on the farm and transport on the road so there were some very good horsemen in the village and some pretty shrewd judges of horses.

“Up until the ‘50s the farmers relied on them to do all their work on the farms, so the horses had to be up to the job. They really knew through years of experience what they were looking for in an animal.”

Some of the participants in the show, such as the Cleveland Bays which kicked off the whole affair, will have had ancestries that can be traced back hundreds of years.

But it’s the younger entries that are growing more popular, and the showjumping competitions were hotly-contested.

In addition, other competitions included judging of sheep, ferrets, vintage machinery and the dog show.
