WHITBY Leisure Centre have worked with Whitby District Youth Council to provide cheaper swimming sessions for young people starting in the next school term.
By offering £1 swims Whitby Leisure Centre will enable young people to swim more often.
Youth Councillor Billy Arnold (13) said: “It’s great we have managed to get cheap swimming sessions at the leisure centre. I will be going and hopefully others will too.”
The Youth Council raised the issue of the cost of swimming for young people at the beginning of this year. After a couple of months Scarborough Borough Councillor Sandra Turner was asked by the Youth Council to get involved. Upon writing to Whitby Leisure Centre, a meeting in June started discussions about the possibility of a dedicated cheaper swimming session in school term time.
197 young people in the area signed a petition asking for a cheaper swim and the Leisure Centre agreed to make it happen.
Chris Storer, Manager of Whitby Leisure Centre said ‘’The Youth Council have worked hard on this and did well in selling it to the Leisure Centre. We are looking forward to putting this session on and we are pretty sure it will encourage young people to swim more, which has got to be a good thing’’.
The discounted swim sessions will start on Tuesday 11th September between 3.45pm to 5.30pm at Whitby Leisure Centre. All young people will need a Residents Card to get the discounted rate and can get one for free at the centre.
