YORKSHIRE Water has apologised after raw sewage was seen floating in Whitby harbour, giving the air a “pungent” aroma, according to one eye-witness.
Peter Horbury snapped this picture of a manhole on the slipway off Church Street that overflowed following heavy rainfall on Sunday, leading to the waste washing into the harbour.
A spokesperson for Yorkshire Water said: “We’d like to apologise to residents and visitors to Whitby for a problem which developed on one of our harbour manholes last week following heavy rainfall, which led to the escape of some heavily diluted waste water.
“The problem has now been resolved, and a full investigation is currently underway into the cause of the escape.
“We’d like to reassure customers we’re doing all we can to try and ensure an incident like this is not repeated.”
