Repairs put walkers and cars on right road

Roadworks

Over half a million pounds has been spent on Whitby’s roads and footpaths in the last financial year – with more projects to follow.

North Yorkshire County Council plus contractors last weekend finished a stretch of improvements over 200 metres long on Helredale Road.

The biggest difference has been the creation of a new footpath on the grass verge opposite Helredale shop.

Grass had grown over the footway and soil has been planed off with tar laid on top and compacted.

On Sunday, workmen started on another 200 plus metre stretch from near East Whitby School to Cholmley Way doing similar improvements.

The turf and soil that has been planed off is being re-used in other parts of town.

Rob Wren, the project manager for North Yorkshire County Council said: “It creates a smooth, nice, even footway. There was a footpath on the verge at Helredale Road originally but it was rotten and such a long time ago.

“The roads are generally in good condition but we are just trying to improve what we can. We started the other section on Sunday to minimise disruption to people going to school.”

Other work carried out in Whitby and the surrounding area since last April has included re-surfacing at Castleton, new surfaces on footpaths in the town centre, Brunswick Street, Upgang Lane and White Point Bridge.

Next month a similar programme of works will start from the New Bridge falling just short of the junction at Mayfield Road which is set to undergo an overhaul from a separate funding pot from the Autumn.

Coun Joe Plant told the Gazette: “There is going to be money available for potholes and repairs and the important thing we have to make sure is we get our fair share in Whitby.”

He added: “But £500,000 is a lot of money for a small area so we have done very well with funding. The footpath on Helredale Road will be a benefit to residents, especially the disabled but we have to do our best to maintain them.”
