WHITBY’s largest employer has secured a deal with a supermarket giant that will see its business expand massively over the next few years, with the potential to create many more jobs.
Whitby Seafoods, which employs 130 people at its Fairfield Way factory, has secured a lucrative contract with Tesco which will see its range of frozen scampi roll out across 700 stores nationally.
Graham Whittle, owner of Whitby Seafoods, said: “We’ve got here by this business’ perseverance over 25 years to break into the market.
“These things have a positive effect and it’s a really good thing for Whitby.
“Hopefully it can have a knock-on effect and the brand of Whitby will be seen nationwide.”
The frozen seafood company first began supplying Tesco two years ago and instantly saw huge demand for their products.
The product range was rolled out across 150 stores in the region, and the partnership created 30 jobs at the factory, and this is set to increase further following the news of this expansion.
On what attracted her to Whitby Seafoods, Caroline Bartrop, Tesco regional marketing manager for the north and east of England said: “As a Yorkshire girl born and bred, I have always enjoyed visiting Whitby and knew Whitby scampi was one of the best.
“Whitby scampi has been so popular in Yorkshire and it has such a great British heritage that we knew we had to take this great local line nationwide.
“The rate of sale of the product was so high in local stores that we knew it was more than worthy of extending nationally.”
Founded in 1985, Whitby Seafoods has quickly grown into the largest scampi supplier in the UK and, despite its success, still remains a homegrown Whitby family business, with Mr Whittle still running the business with his daughter Laura and his sons Edward and Daniel.
Mr Whittle began selling his high quality scampi to local restaurants and pubs but as demand for British scampi grew so did the business and he began supplying other local outlets.
Driven by the desire to make all their products local, healthy and sustainable, Whitby Seafoods products are coated, frozen and packed in Whitby and all the scampi used in Whitby Scampi is caught in UK waters by UK fishermen, including Whitby’s very own fishing fleet.
