The chairman of Whitby’s Harbour Board has pledged that harbour users will not be disadvantaged by new plans to open up a restricted car park to the public.

On April 17 the harbour board gave the go ahead to plans to open up a portion of Whitby’s Marina car park to pay and display public parking.

At present permit holders were only able to use the car park, which harbour board chairman Councillor Mike Cockerill said left large spaces unoccupied.

He explained: “We undertook a study which made it clear that a lot of the car park was empty, yet there were other pay and display car parks that were absolutely chock-a-block.”

A trial held last year allowed the marina attendant to open up the car park to pay and display users. Cllr Cockerill said this proved a success and now the plan will come into force from April 30.

42 people, including some boat owners who pay for permits to park there, objected to the plans - with some saying it would put boat owners off coming to the town.

However Cllr Cockerill insisted that permit holders will continue to have priority and a space will always be available for them.
