A GROUP of Whitby schoolchildren have had a sneak peak of the town’s new superstore.
The Reception Class from East Whitby Primary School visited the site of Sainsbury’s new store on Stainsacre Lane.
East Whitby teacher Julie George said: “The children take a keen interest in what’s going on in their local area and we’ve been learning about construction so this was a fantastic chance for them to see what they’ve been learning about in action.
“It’s a great way for them to see the different professions that are involved on a job like this, and all the hard work and expertise that goes into it. It’s really helped bring to life what they’ve been learning in the classroom.”
From the purpose built viewing platform, pupils had a birdseye view of the site and could see the store building taking shape. They also got to speak to the on-site team from Sainsbury’s contractors Longross and learn about the project.
Steve Clasper, project manager for Sainsbury’s said:
“This is a good opportunity to get the local community involved and getting schoolchildren to visit the site allows them to see what’s going on and learn about site safety and construction.
“They also get to meet the site team and see the machines at work. Hopefully it’s given a few of them some ideas about future careers too.”
The new store is due to open in the August and the visitor centre will be open on Tuesday to Thursday between 10am and 4pm until 28 June.
