A FAMILY chippy is facing a tense wait to see whether it has won a national award.

Royal Fisheries on Baxtergate, which is run by the Fusco family, is one of three chippies from across the UK that has been nominated and shortlisted for the Favourite Family Chippy Awards being run by drinks firm Ben Shaws.

There are three generation of the same family working in the shop full time.

The first Fusco fish and chip shop was started in North Yorkshire over 60 years ago and in 1968 Royal Fisheries was established.

The judges were said to be impressed by the dedication to the community and that the Fusco family maintained a friendly and independent face on the high street.

Owner Carol Fusco said: “Being recognised as a finalist in these awards is a massive privilege. We are a family who are committed to our trade and our customers. We sleep, eat and breathe fish and chips and would be over the moon if we won this year.”

On Friday Royal Fisheries took its campaign to the streets of Whitby handing out free samples of fish and chips in a bid to win votes.

There is still time to back the Fusco family with voting lines open until Monday. The winner will be announced on Friday 7 October.

Judge Sundeep Gill said: “The Royal Fisheries long standing experience within the fish and chip industry and personal heritage really stood out for us during the judging.

“Their strong reputation is testament of their success as a small family business through the generations since the 1950s.”
