The Saxon Villa in Fylingthorpe has been voted the fourth-best bed and breakfast in the world by online holiday watchdog TripAdvisor.
The website’s Travellers’ Choice Awards honoured the B & B whose owners were delighted by their inclusion.
Des Weston, who runs the guesthouse with wife Heather, told the Whitby Gazette: “It’s a bit of a shock really.”
“We didn’t expect this- we’ve only been open two years,” he said.
“We got a phone call on Sunday saying that we might be up for one of the awards, but we only found out for sure on Tuesday night via Google.”
TripAdvisor also ranked the Saxon as the third-best bed and breakfast in the UK.
It invites customers to leave reviews of accommodation and 234 of the 239 listed on the website rated the Saxon as ‘excellent’, while the other five chose ‘very good’.
Various comments compliment the cleanliness of rooms and the hospitality, with ‘Clemenceau’ from Yorkshire’s review describing the property as an ‘imposing yet charming late Victorian detached house in the village of Fylingthorpe. ‘
‘David’ from Leeds stated: ‘It felt like we were being invited into their own home. There were lots of little details that showed a great deal of thought had been put in.’
‘SteveRats’ of Huddersfield added: ‘The position for Whitby, Robin’s Hood Bay and the coast walks was very convenient. It was in close proximity to a few good restaurants and pubs.’
“I think the setting helps.” Des agreed. “The rooms look out over the Bay and Ravenscar. We’re friendly and there are good-sized rooms.”
Des and Heather are retired English teachers who worked in Wakefield until 2011, when they moved to Fylingthorpe, though they were already familiar with the area.
“We’d been going up to Robin Hood’s Bay camping for twenty years,” Des revealed.
“It’s great meeting new people from all over the world. We’re based somewhere really nice and we love the lifestyle.”
North Yorkshire featured heavily in the B & B chart, with the All Seasons Guest House in Filey finishing second and the Millgate in Masham taking eighth.
