A WHITBY fish and chip restaurant has achieved new heights by winning two prestigious national awards.

Trencher’s Restaurant in Whitby is the latest restaurant in the UK to receive the prestigious Fish and Chip Quality Award, held by only a handful of restaurants in the country.

No stranger to success, Trencher’s has also retained its title as home to the national “Loo of the year: independent restaurant” for the tenth time.

General manager Andrew Wilkinson, who only recently took up his post after starting as a table clearer there at the age of 13, said of the quality award: “There’s only a few in the country, but we have been judged by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) and they said that we met their criteria of going the extra mile with our service, our quality and our hygiene.”

Trancher’s is the first fish and chip restaurant in Whitby to receive this award, which signals to the consumer that they can buy with confidence where the award is displayed, which is hoped will encourage more outlets to raise their standards.

Each Fish and Chip Quality Award is valid for two years and retention is dependent on standards being maintained as validated by NFFF officials and appointed assessors.

The new manager has also highlighted that the restaurant does not intend to rest on its laurels and there are plans to open a takeaway service, next door, later this month.
