Free parking is being introduced in some areas of Whitby to encourage people to shop in the town centre in the run up to Christmas.
On 5, 12, 19 December from 3pm onwards and from 11am on Sundays it will be free to park in the off street car parks in Church Street, Cliff Street, Marina Back, Marina Front and St Hilda’s Terrace.
The move has been put forward by the borough council as part of a bid to support traders
Coun Penny Marsden said: “Earlier this year we decided to freeze charges in all our off-street car parks, yet with improved signage and in some cases, modified layouts, parking revenue is up on last year, which has allowed us to give something back in the lead up to Christmas.
“We hope the incentive of free parking will encourage people to spend money in our town centres and support retailers who we know have had a difficult time of it over the last few years.”
