Couple run new Whitby pawnbrokers

When Alex Affleck decided to open Whitby’s first branch of Ramsdens Financial, he didn’t have to look far to find his new business partner.
And it didn’t take the experienced pawnbroker long to convince girlfriend Leanne Whyte to exchange her education role for a new life as part of the UK’s largest independent pawnbrokers.
Alex is now teaching his other half the ropes at the new Ramsdens branch on Baxtergate after Leanne gave up her job as a teaching assistant in a Redcar primary school.
“It’s an adventure together,” said Leanne, who has a degree in education and counselling.
“It’s a big change of career but I’m really enjoying it. Alex is good at his job and I’m learning from him every day, while I’ve also undertaken a training course with Ramsdens.”
Alex joined his father Steve’s Ramsdens franchise in Eston, Middlesbrough, straight from school. For the past seven years he ran the family’s Ramsdens franchise in Redcar.
But now he is settling into life in Whitby.
