Coach loads of day trippers could be forced away from Whitby unless a specific parking area for buses can be identified.
The warning comes from tour operators and a local councillor following the borough council’s decision to remove designated coach parking bays at the Marina car park.
It means coaches coming to Whitby are struggling to park up in the town centre or even drop passengers off before being forced to park in areas such as the industrial estates or the layby near Caedmon School.
Basing them up at the new park and ride has been ruled out as it isn’t big enough to accommodate the increasing numbers that visit the town – and that is only set to get busier as the summer season progresses.
Coun Joe Plant has called for an urgent meeting between tourism and transport bosses to identify alternative sites and solutions.
He said: “We must do what we can to make sure that we are coach friendly.
“We need a coach park area sorted out instead of letting them park all over the town. There must be somewhere we can make a car park.
“Whitby is a popular tourist destination with people coming from all over the country and the world. If we don’t do something they are not going to come and Whitby will lose out.”
