SCARBOROUGH, Whitby and Ryedale Mind is encouraging local employers to host a fundraising breakfast today (20 May) as part of their Taking Care of Business campaign.
The campaign encourages employees to talk about the “elephant in the room” and take steps to create a working environment that is conducive to good mental health.
The main aim of the business breakfast event is to get staff talking about the issues that concern them and to draw attention to Mind’s Employment Support Service.
This service provides free, impartial advice and support to staff and employees around issues from stress management and sickness leave to establishing work-reasonable adjustments and assisting in the development of action plans aiming to help businesses maintain skilled employees.
Julie Nichol, chief executive officer, said: “Please join us on 20 May in helping to put an end to poor mental health in the workplace.
“According to a recent study stress has caused one in five workers to call in sick, but due to the stigma surrounding mental health issues a massive 93 per cent admit to lying about the real reason for their absence.
“In spite of this, research shows that staff want to be able to talk about these issues, 70 per cent wanted to be able to discuss stress with their employers and a third hoped their boss would approach them when they are showing signs of strain.”
