John and Margaret Porteus of Station Avenue, Whitby, celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary this week.
The couple, who were married at the West Cliff Congregational Church on Skinner Street on 10 October 1951, celebrated 60 years of marriage by enjoying a meal at the Horseshoe in Levisham with family
Mr and Mrs Porteus, who both hail from Whitby, met at the town’s now non-existent Open Air Swimming Pool at the ages of 18 and 17 respectively.
John, now 82, worked in a number of occupations before retiring, including as a plumber and electrician at Lawsons, a caretaker at West Cliff school, and as a site manager at Caedmon school. Margaret, who will soon be 81, worked at her family’s business at Hall’s on Haggersgate, and then as piano teacher until her retirement.
The couple currently have three sons, eight grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
John claims that their secret to a long-lasting marriage is simply ‘just a lot of give and take’.
