THE 43rd Whitby Folk Week is in full swing with more than 700 events taking place in 40 venues across Whitby.
Graham Pirt, one of the directors told the Whitby Gazette: “It is going very well. All the dance teams have been able to go ahead as the weather has held.
“The new use of Whitby Pavilion Theatre for dancers and concerts, in addition to all the oth
er venues, has gone really well.”
The event attracted 3,000 ticket sales – that figure does not include people who have turned up and bought tickets on the door.
“We have at least 3,000 people in town for this – it’s hard to say for sure at the moment but it may even be as many as 7,500.
“This week brings over £3m of revenue into Whitby.
“We have booked 106 accommocation spaces in hotels, B&Bs and self-catering accommodation for the artistes alone,” added Mr Pirt.
Forthcoming highlights include Eliza Carthy’s ‘Queen’ themed ceilidh on Thursday at 10.30pm in the main hall of the Pavilion and the Irish band Doonan Family also at the Pavilion tonight at 10pm.
A special cake is on display in Bothams window to mark the event, which runs until Friday.
