PEOPLE who want to organise large-scale fund-raising events in the countryside surrounding Whitby are being urged to consult experts from North Yorkshire County Council.
The council’s countryside rangers are happy to advise anyone planning a large-scale walk on the best routes, rights of way and any hazards they may encounter.
They also work with public rights of way officers and the heritage team by undertaking p
ractical improvements to footpaths and bridleways so that wherever possible routes are safe and easy to use.
But organisers of large-scale walking events in fragile and sensitive areas could cause environmental damage such as path erosion or disturbance of livestock and wildlife.
Countryside ranger Steve Green said: “We would encourage organisers of large-scale and sponsored events to liaise with us to be sure of presenting a good route. We can advise on rights of way and because we have site specific knowledge can inform if there are any hazards such as path erosion.
“Some routes might look fine on the map but they might not be the best ones to opt for. Good planning is essential for events such as this to be a success. Many people don’t realise that our service is on hand to help on issues like access, safety and safeguarding the environment.”
Anybody organising a large-scale sponsored walk who would like advice from the countryside rangers should contact Aidan Raynar, team leader, public rights of way (01609) 533077.
