THE organisation that provides vital support for people in the area with mental health difficulties is seeking volunteers in Whitby to help.
Coinciding with National Mind Week which runs until Saturday Mind in Whitby is aiming to recruit volunteers from the area.
The charity supports people with mental difficulties by finding the right accommodation and to maintain their independence within the community, as well as providing volunteers who offer friendship and support, drop-in sessions and programmes of learning.
In particular, Mind is looking for volunteers to join the befriending scheme that people with mental health problems find so valuable.
Julie Nichol, chief executive officer for Scarborough, Whitby & Ryedale Mind, said: “The work done by our volunteers is extremely important to local Mind and makes a very real difference to the lives of people with mental health problems and is appreciated.
“We know there are people in Whitby and the Esk Valley area who could help us provide this valuable support and gain a great deal from the experience themselves. We would love to hear from them.”
Mind offers trained volunteers who can give friendship and support to people with mental health difficulties in Whitby and the Esk Valley.
It is working actively in the area at the moment to try and find people who would like to work as volunteer befrienders.
Volunteers come from all walks of life and join for a variety of reasons – to gain experience, learn more about mental health or just to help. They don’t need any experience of mental health issues – just a willingness to commit time on a regular basis to helping others.
In return they get training, regular support, a contribution towards expenses and the opportunity to join in with our volunteers get-togethers throughout the year – as well as the rewarding experience of making a real difference.
Volunteers will be providing various types of support – from practical help, guidance and information to emotional support.
They will undego a short training course, which are often held in Whitby and will also learn about how to offer people support and in particular how the befriending scheme works.

There is also an exhibition this week at Whitby Library about the work of Mind and opportunities for volunteering.
