A MINI-regatta is going to be held on Saturday and Sunday after last weekend's weather meant the rowing races and various other events had to be cancelled.
At the time of going to press, the regatta committee said it may hold a couple of rowing races during the week but the bulk of the races would be held this coming weekend, weather permitting.
Ivor Greer, chairman of Whitby Regatta, said: "It's unfor
tunate we've not been able to go ahead with any of the rowing races or the other boat events.
"We are hopeful this coming weekend over the Saturday and Sunday we can run the rowing races and perhaps the yacht races and the raft race."
Mr Greer said they were also unable to run the tombola and pick-a-pen stall which usually raise thousands of pounds for the annual event on Regatta Saturday. And if they are able to hold the mini regatta his band of dedicated volunteers will be manning a tombola, pick-a-pen stall and selling regatta souvenirs to help swell their funds over this weekend.
The regatta fun run which did not take place on Sunday morning due to the strong winds is also likely to be held at a later date.
"I just want to thank people for their support and the hard work of everyone who helped put the regatta together," he said.
Friendship Rowing Club member Richard Green said the rowing clubs had been expecting the bad weather since last Wednesday.
"Everyone has been training hard all year and we were all set up for this weekend. It's the kids more than anything that are disappointed."
