WHITBY Town councillors have given their grudging support to an application by Vodafone for a replacement mast at Whitby Town's Turnbull Ground.
While the councillors shared residents’ anxiety about the new mast and the health implications the planning committee said it could only make a decision based on planning regulations.

Several residents wrote in objection to the plans by the mobile phone giant to put a new transmitter in the Ocean Road side of the ground to replace an old one.

They expressed concern over the possible health risks.

Coun Terry Jennison said: “I understand their concerns but we can only comment on it from a planning point of view.”

The committee recommended the plan be approved but asked that Vodafone should be asked to contact all the residents who had fears about the mast.
