A NEW convenience store is to be built in Staithes by the Co-op to replace a smaller one in the village, members of the North York Moors National Park planning committee agreed.
The new store will be on the site of the present Cleveland Garage at the entrance to Staithes on Whitby Road.

Applicants the Co-operative Group Limited said its present shop in the village’s Jubilee Terrace is unsatisfactory, on a narrow road wit
h restricted access and is too small.

The new store will be single-storey and has been designed in the form of a seaside pavilion with clean white render and a pantile roof.

The design is a contemporary one with metal framing and rendered masonry piers.

There will be a parking area with eight public parking spaces.

A report to the members said the amount of parking provision reflected the fact that the store is intended to cater for local top-up shopping in contrast to larger superstores which attract mainly weekly shopping trips.

There would be two deliveries to the store a day, one made by a large Co-op vehicle and another of bread by a small van.

They would be timed in order not to conflict with the dropping off and picking up times at the nearby school.

In recommending approval planning officers said the proposed redevelopment of the site with a building of a contemporary style, but using materials similar to those in surrounding buildings, would be a significant improvement to the appearance of Staithes and would accord with Local Plan policies.
