A MASTERPLAN to overhaul Whitby's West Cliff has been unveiled and includes improving the existing attractions and adding another hotel.
Scarborough Council will vote on the proposals from the Whitby West Cliff Task Group on Monday.

The group, made up of councillors and tourism officers who met with tourism organisations and the Civic Society, has spent almost a year looking at the
area.

It has come up with a list of recommendations for next year and beyond that will, in its words, make "a more attractive West Cliff with an improved physical environment".

Its first recommendations are for short-term remedial works in the areas most in need, such as the paddling pool, the sunken gardens and shelters. In the long-term, it wants to address issues surrounding accommodation and parking as well as improving Tucker's Field and the paddling pool.

The report says: "Both the local Tourism Association and local councillors feel Whitby is currently losing hotel accommodation to flat conversions and other change of uses, and this affects Whitby Pavilion's ability to host conferences."

The preferred site for the new hotel would be on the site of the Royal Crescent car park, which it claims would attract the interest of commercial operators.

It adds: "The Civic Society also regards this site as a natural location for a new hotel."

New parking areas would also need to be found and is regarded by the task group as a "critical issue".

The long-term future of the paddling pool is also in doubt due to its deteriorating condition but the task group feels it is a major asset for the West Cliff.

"There is clearly support for the retention and renovation of the paddling pool," the report says.

"Many value its quaint, traditional lido type charm. The Civic Society suggests it needs more shelter, landscaping and seating for parents.

"The Hospitality Association suggests that in the short-term, it is tiled and fenced."

The short term remedial works to the West Cliff are expected to cost around £19,000 with a group set up to look at the long-term aims, which also include new children's play and sports facilities.

Scarborough Council's projects and partnership overview and scrutiny committee will vote on the proposals on Monday.
