RESIDENTS had to be evacuated from their homes on Friday night after a fire ripped through a Whitby garage.
It is believed the blaze, which has gutted Prospect Garage in Arundel Place started from a leaking propane gas heater at around 8.40pm.
Fire crews from Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay and Lythe were called to the scene as well as police officers.
After 20 minutes, residents living in nearby streets were evacuated from their homes by police until the blaze was brought under control.
Firefighters wore breathing apparatus and used two main water jets, two hose reels and two ground monitors to tackle the fire.
But despite their best efforts, 80% of the garage was destroyed by the flames and adjoining properties also suffered smoke damage.
