A CHARITY gig held in honour of a well-known Whitby man raised £450 for Whitby Hospital's heather unit.
Local bands Nostalgia and the DT’s performed at Whitby Rugby Club recently, free of charge, in a gig to raise money for the ward, which looks after terminally-ill patients.
The gig raised the cash in memory of local man Tommy Hopper who died sudde
nly aged 73 in the heather unit, and who was a lover of all kinds of music.
Tommy, originally from Robin Hood’s Bay, moved to St Peter’s Road where he lived for most of his life.
The bands played covers of popular music, from Girls Aloud to Blondie, with 60s and 70s rock thrown in too.
The aim of the gig was to provide accessible entertainment for as wide a range of people as possible.
Jamie Boyce, Tommy’s son- in-law who organised the concert, said: “Tom would be proud. He had a great love of music and could regularly be heard playing the harmonica at local folk clubs in recent years since his retirement.
“We are grateful to everyone who turned up and supported us.”
Tommy’s family thanks the Rugby Club and the two bands as well as the Whitby Gazette for publicity, Jewson, Bay Taxis, Robinson’s Jet, Sanders Yard Restaurant, Whitby Library staff, Ellis’, Barnard’s Butchers and many more for raffle prizes and donations.
