WHITBY students are toasting their success in yesterday's GCSE examination results.
Hazel Kirk, assistant headteacher at Whitby Community College said: "In 2007 we achieved our best year for results in terms of the number of students gaining five A* to C grades at GCSE; 61%.

"This year we have made a slight improvement on this and when all the re-marked papers come in we will probably have 64% at this level."

Headteacher Keith Prytherch said: "I am especially pleased for those who have achieved well despite suffering some form of adversity in their life this year."

And Ken James, headteacher at Fyling Hall School said: "I am delighted by these results.

"For a non-selective school, they represent a significant achievement for the pupils and staff.

"Special mention should also be made of Stefan Walker (8 A*, 2A, 2B), Harry Bamford (2A*, 6A, 2B), Nick Beaumont (3 A*, 7A, 2B) and Alex Corner (2A*, 4A, 4B).

"However, I'm proud of all the pupils – they have worked incredibly hard."
