ORGANISERS of Whitby Regatta have revealed big plans to celebrate the event's 170th anniversary.
Dates for this year's three-day extravaganza have been confirmed as Saturday 21 August to Monday 23 August.
The announcement quashes concerns the regatta would not take place after a wrangle with local hoteliers due to the fact Whitby Folk Week clas
hes with the spectacle.
But before the town's premiere event takes place in the summer, organisers have revealed they are holding a huge fund-raising event at Whitby Pavilion on Friday 30 April.
Whitby Regatta committee, Fisherlads and Friendship Rowing Clubs, as well as Scarborough Rowing Club, are teaming up to lay on the moneyspinner which will raise money for Help for Heroes and Whitby Lifeboat – as well as celebrate 170 years of the country's longest running rowing regatta.
Whitby Regatta secretary, Sarah Blackwell, told the Whitby Gazette: "It is an exciting year for Whitby Regatta.
"Not only are we hoping the event is bigger and better than ever, we are celebrating a milestone.
"We are working with the rowing clubs, and the whole town, to commemorate 170 years of the regatta while raising money for good causes at the same time.
"We want individuals and businesses to join in and support us, not only for the event in April but for the regatta as well."
At the Whitby Pavilion event, local bands will perform and there will be all sorts of fund-raising on the night, including a raffle, and local businesses have been invited to contribute.
The 170th celebration event will also include a display of old photographs, press cuttings and people's memories of the rowing clubs and the regatta.
Organisers are looking for Whitby Gazette readers to contact them with any information they may have and would like to share with the town.
