A LOCAL willow weaver shared her skills with a workshop for Whitby in Bloom.

Rebecca Corner from Fylingthorpe showed the group how to complete a willow basket and the techniques of using and creating objects from willow which is a natural resource.

Susan Davies, chairman of Whitby in Bloom said: “Rebecca can make anything from a baby’s rattle to a willow coffin. She is very talented and she was very patient as we each learnt the different weaving patterns.

“We were all very happy to be able to take home our own personal basket created in the day. It’s interesting to see how, although the basic basket is the same, each person puts their own distinctive look to the finished product.”

This year Whitby in Bloom is looking at the ways in which people use the things they can grow in their own spaces from flowers to fruit and vegetables.

The group will soon be supporting RAF cadets by making flower arrangements when they receive their new colours and workshops to create garden sculptures in May are already fully booked.
