UK's top comedy stars bring a month of mirth

A NEW series of nights bringing the best of the UK comedy scene to Whitby will be running throughout July.

And you can win a pair of tickets for all four nights in today's (FRI 19 JUNE) Whitby Gazette.

Musicport decided that, after the interest shown in the comedy nights which were put on at The Resolution, it was worth trying a whole series of nights to see if it was worth looking at a year-round comedy club.

Hilarity Bites, which is running the event in conjunction with Musicport, already runs very successful nights in Stockton and Darlington and felt the Coliseum in Whitby is an ideal venue.

Jim McLaughlin of Musicport said: "I think the time is right for a bit of live comedy in Whitby during these recession-hit times.

"I hope this first month proves successful enough that we can develop it further in the months to come.

"I think it's a pretty impressive line-up and with Hilarity Bites we have found a partner who understands how to develop a comedy club so I think the omens are good.

"I think the reports from up and down the country show that live comedy is doing well and we believe it will prove a really positive addition to the recent Compass Club live music programme at The Coliseum which was so positively received."

The first of the July shows is on Saturday 4 July, starring Alun Cochrane, Barry Dodds, Sam Gore and MC Dave Twentyman.

Headlining the night, Alun is a star of BBC2's Never Mind the Buzzcocks and Channel 4's Eight out of Ten Cats, among others and he will be performing an hour-long set previewing his new show Alun Cochrane is a Daydreamer (At Night).

Barry Dodds was a finalist in the Jimmy Carr Comedy Idol competition who has taken the national circuit by storm with his disarming Geordie wit and wry, down-to-earth observational humour.

Sam Gore is rated as a relative rookie rated as having the makings of class act while MC Dave Twentyman who is currently riding high on the UK comedy scene with his improvisation and interaction delivered with warmth and charm.

Doors open at 7.30pm ready for the show to start at 8pm.

Tickets cost 7.50 per night or you can pay 20 for all four nights; these are available from the venue, the Port Hole on Skinner Street, or online at www.whitbymusicport.com or call (01947) 603509 to buy in advance, which is recommended. The organisers will be operating an over 18s only policy on the door.
