Special performance from headline act
THE headline act for Whitby’s Musicport Festival has been announced.
The Friday night headline act for the world music festival at Whitby Pavilion will be The Neville Staple Band who will perform at the venue on 18 October.
Neville Staple who is best known for his work as the singer and toaster in Ska and Two Tone legends The Specials, will play a set featuring a mix of The Specials and Ska classics such as Gangsters, A Message To You Rudy, Monkey Man, Ghost Town and Night Club as well as tracks from his second chart topping band The Fun Boy Three, some Jamaican Ska classics and brand new original solo material.
Neville is one of the great figureheads of the second wave of British ska that broke across the nation’s music scene in the late 70s.
Alongside Terry Hall and Jerry Dammers, Neville Staple was at the centre of perhaps UK ska’s most-loved bands The Specials who had seven consecutive top 10 hits between 1979 and 1981.
When The Specials broke up, Neville formed Fun Boy Three with Terry Hall and Lynval Golding, and over the two year life span of the band they had six UK top 20 hits including The Lunatics (Have Taken Over The Asylum).
The first 100 weekend tickets for Musicport sold within an hour and half of being put on sale last Friday and have kept selling well since.
Organiser Jim McLaughlin said: “It was really encouraging to sell so many tickets without a headliner in place and now we have the great Neville Staple confirmed I’m sure they’ll carry on selling.
“We should confirm some other big names within the next month or so.
“We’re looking forward to working with the new management at Whitby Pavilion to really promote the event and develop further what we do within the local area and within the venue.”
Session tickets for the Friday Night of Musicport will be available shortly via the Musicport Shop or from Whitby Pavilion.
