WHITBY Gazette readers may be able to recall the construction of the famous golf balls at RAF Fylingdales - for years, one of the most prominent landmarks on the North York Moors.
A Whitby ex-pat, Peter Casson, wrote from his home in Beverwijk, The Netherlands, to say he came across this photo of the moorland base when it was being built although he couldn’t put a date on it.
“Many locals were involved in the construction work,” he said.
“You get a sense of scale by the figure in the doorway.”
The golf balls were replaced by the current pyramid in the mid-90s.
