Singers from Castleton’s Choral Society

SOME of the older residents of upper Eskdale may recognise some of the singers on this postcard, bearing the annotation ‘Castleton Choral Society 1930’.

Interestingly, there are still two choirs associated with the village - The Dalesmen male voice choir and the Singing for Pleasure group which meets weekly in the village.

The photo, emailed to the Whitby Gazette by Martin Pearson, was taken in a field to the rear of The Downe Arms, just about where the houses in Robin Hood’s Close now stand.

The Howe can be seen in the background.
