Surfers have been riding high in the Whitby waters with a fortnight of great surf.

It is unusual at this time of year to get such high waves but surfers have been making the most of it, staying in the water as late as 10.30pm.

Luke Russell, son of lifeboat coxswain Mike Russell, was pictured surfing off Raithwaite Beck by freelance photographer Scott Wicking.

Scott said: “It is unusual for this time of year, the surf has been better in summer than winter.

“I had just had a surf myself. I got in the water at 9pm and didn’t get out until 10.30pm.”
