Musical tribute to teacher

AN AFTERNOON of music in memory of a Staithes man who taught youngsters from across the district for 40 years is being held at one of the village’s pubs.

Music-lover Brian Butcher, who taught English and drama at Caedmon School, died in January.

To honour him, an afternoon of live acoustic music will take place at The Captain Cook in Staithes on Sunday 3 March.

Brian was influential on the local live music, drama and cultural scene and was a huge fan and performer of live acoustic music in all its forms.

He was a regular performer at the Busker’s Sunday events which used to take place at the Captain Cook and Brian was trying to resurrect the monthly event in the months before he died.

Musicians who used to attend the monthly event will gather to perform in his memory, and it is hoped the event will reoccur on the first Sunday of every month – renamed in his memory as Butcher’s Sunday.

Any past or new performers are welcome at the event, and skill is not a requirement to perform – all musicians and performers, whatever their skill level, are treated and received with equal respect.

One of the organisers, Chris Firth said: “Brian was renowned for his love of live music, particularly acoustic folk, sea shanties and community choirs.

“He thought that enthusiasm, tolerance and good humour was often as important as skill when playing live.

The Staithes event will try and capture the sense of humour and zest for life that Brian brought to live music in this area throughout the years.”

As well as an ‘open mic’ acoustic session a couple of local bands that Brian championed will play short sets to give thanks for his support.

The Salam UK Band, the north’s only middle eastern acoustic outfit, will perform, as will Whitby’s notorious skiffle ensemble, The Good Tea Band.

The event – which will run from 2pm to 6pm – is free, with a request for donations to a charity of Brian’s family’s choice, The Star Fund c/o James Cook Hospital.
