WHITBY’S prize-winning Captain Cook Memorial Museum continues to be one of the town’s prime attractions, popular with visitors from overseas as well as this country.
This year, it will host a new exhibition called Oceans Apart which will feature a bizarre exhibit – an ornate canoe prow – the part of the vessel’s bow visible above the water.
Museum administrator Peter Rowe said he hopes the exhibition is a huge success.
“It’s about the sailing craft of the South Seas and features a rare Maori canoe prow dating from the mid 19th Century that we have on loan from Hull Maritime Museum.”
The museum in Grape Lane is where Captain Cook served his apprenticeship before setting out on the epic voyages that led to the opening up of Australia, New Zealand and many other countries throughout the world.
Among the thousand of visitors it attracts, 1,462 last year were from overseas - 720, came from Australia and192 from New Zealand. Others came from countries including Scandinavia and Africa.
The museum will open daily from 11am to 3pm from 16 February to 31 March and from 1 April to 3 November daily from 9.45am to 5pm.
