Moors president publishes memoirs
AS part of celebrations for its 25th year, the North Yorkshire Moors Association has published the memoirs of its President, Derek Statham, who was the National Park Officer for the North York Moors National Park from 1974 to 1994.
Prior to that for a number of years, he was responsible for the work on the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales, North Riding and National Park Committees.
The period covered by the book, from 1965 to 1994, was one of conflict and change in the countryside and the book offers a fascinating insight into the intrigues and pressures which resulted in a remarkable change in attitudes towards conserving the environment.
So far as is known, this is the only published firsthand account of running a national park.
The book has a foreword by Adrian Phillips who was the Director of the Countryside Commission for much of the time and is lavishly illustrated with photographs.

The Whitby Gazette has five copies of the book, worth 6 each, to be won.
