Lou exhibits photos in 'Bay

ROBIN Hood's Bay's Lou Hughes has spent two years photographing the village in new and imaginative ways.

Her latest exhibition, Windows of Waves, explores the relationship between the village of Robin Hood's Bay and the sea and, in particular, where the boundaries between the two are blurred.

Lou said: "I have photographed a special world that is full of magic.

"I found the village inside rock pools, waves in cottage windows and strange landscapes on the sea wall.

"The two worlds (of sea and village] merge in surprising places in a poetic, surreal and dream-like world that is constantly changing."

Born in Middlesbrough, Lou was first brought to Robin Hood's Bay as a baby by her parents.

The family soon bought a cottage in the heart of the village and, from then on, Lou and her brothers spent every school holiday exploring the rock pools and narrow winding alleyways.

After studying textile design at the University of Ulster, Lou lived in the village for a year, before moving to Edinburgh to study Art Therapy.

For the next 20 years, Lou visited the Bay as often as she could and in 2008 the chance arose to move back to the Bay permanently.

Lou added: "The photographs show the Bay as I see it. I have tried to capture the essence of a place that I have loved for as long as I can remember.

"The work really is a celebration of my return home."

Windows of Waves represents over 18 months work and can be seen at the Wave Gallery, New Road, Robin Hood's Bay, from tomorrow to 12 September.
