Last chance to see Hickey images at gallery

FOR a different view of North Yorkshire and the North East, June's Photographer of the Month at Sue and Steve Photography, The Gallery in Guisborough is a must-see event.

The amazing large panoramic photographs by Redcar-based landscape photographer Ged Hickey provide a unique and captivating perspective on our region.

Ged has only recently completed a project to capture the landscapes of the South Downs, The West Country, Wales and the Peak District as panoramic images, but it is the landscape nearer to home that first inspired him.

Born in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Gerald Hickey lived most of his childhood at Marske.

He worked as a pipefitter before retraining to become an interior designer after completing a BTEC course at Cleveland College of Art and a BA (Hons) Degree course at Teesside University.

Gerald completed a MSc specialising in Computer Animation at Teesside University.

Tragedy struck soon after when his wife Lesley was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

He put his career on hold in order to care for his wife and young children.

Gerald completed three short films, the first one Cursored was shown as part of Animex film festival in Middlesbrough.

The second was an animated version of Danni Minogue's Put the Needle on it pop video.

The third film Copout involved him working with Newcastle-based film agency Northern Film and Media.

In 2007, on his 25th wedding anniversary, he visited Staithes where he took a series of photographs of the harbour in the hope of joining them together later.

The results sparked his passion for landscape photography and he bought his first quality camera: a Canon Eos D40 with wide angle lens.

Sadly Lesley died and the family were left devastated.

Since then, with support from his family and especailly his daughter Laura, Gerald has devoted his time to visiting local areas and touring the United Kingdom in hope of capturing it's beauty.

Gerald believes in making the photo fit the view rather than being restricted by the lens or a single shot hence the majority of his photos are panoramic.

This can result in distortion on occasions which he also finds interesting.

Gerald's first exhibition Escaping the Lens proved to be such a success that he has now gone on to fulfil his dream of becoming a professional photographer.
