Heartbeat actor stars in play premiere

EX-Heartbeat actor David Lonsdale and a Glaisdale actor and director have joined forces to take to the stage for a world premiere of a new play.

Esk Valley theatre director Mark Stratton will perform alongside David, who played village idiot David Stockwell in the ITV drama, both star in Sun Trap, a comedy drama showing at the Gala Theatre in Durham.

After 13 years in Heartbeat, David promised to spend a year at home in Southport and only accept jobs within commuting distance.

He's been spending his time doing personal appearances and spent the panto season at the Lyceum Theatre in Crewe.

He said: "It's a treat returning to the North Eastandmeeting up withMark again after previously appearing in Heartbeat together.

"I have very fond memories of the Esk Valley including Glaisdale where we got snowed in a couple of years ago and had great trouble getting in and out with the unit."

David has an ongoing association with Whitby taking part in last year's Whitby Now extravaganza at Whitby Pavilion and the Help for Heroes' charity event.

He will also be doing a charity book signing at Goathland Stores during August when he hopes to pop along and visit the Esk Valley Theatre where Mark will be directing their production of Second from Last in the Sack Race.

In Sun Trap, Mark and David play good friends who have left Tyneside for Tenerife and are hoping to make a fortune in Spanish property dealing.

All seems to be going to plan at first, but lurking beneath the surface are emotions as dark as any rainy night in the North East; and as their characters play a high stakes golf game, there is more riding on the last hole than money.

Mark added: "We are really enjoying working together.

"David is a terrific actor and it's always exciting doing new writing. We have to play golf on stage at certain points and as neither of us are golfers, it should be, well, interesting.

"We had some tuition from a professional coach the other day, so hopefully we won't completely disgrace ourselves; at the moment it's just a relief when we make contact with the ball."

Sun Trap runs at the Gala Theatre in Durham from now to 3 July.
