Summer date for Quo to rock open air theatre
Brit Award winning and triple platinum album selling rock band Status Quo is the first act to be announced for next summer’s line up at Scarborough Open Air Theatre.
The band, whose famous Rockin’ All Over The World track is instantly recognised around the globe, will perform on Saturday 27 July next year when Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt, Andrew Bown, John ‘Rhino’ Edwards and Matt Ledley will rock the stage with one of their legendary live performances, treating fans to many of Quo’s most popular hits from the last 50 years.
Status Quo’s total world-wide record sales exceed 118 million units.
The band has recorded 64 British hit singles, more than any other band, with 22 of those reaching the UK Top 10.
Quo’s 1990 Rockin’ All Over The Years album sold more than 1.1 million units in Great Britain, attaining triple platinum sales status.
The album spent over six months in the British Albums Chart, including ten weeks in the Top 10. World-wide sales of the album exceed seven million.
Coun David Chance, Scarborough Borough Council’s cabinet member for Tourism and Culture said: “It’s fantastic that Scarborough has been able to attract such an iconic name like Status Quo.
“The band has a very strong fan base with widespread appeal, and with the added bonus of the very special atmosphere offered by the Open Air Theatre, the audience will have an unforgettable night.
“We are really pleased that we have been able to announce the first act for next summer’s line up before Christmas. By continuing with the same management set up we established earlier this year, we’ve been able to negotiate with artists’ agents much earlier.
“We are currently in discussions with a number of other artists and we hope to be able to announce more acts in the very near future.”
And Janet Deacon, area director for Welcome to Yorkshire, added: “Welcome to Yorkshire is proud to support Scarborough Open Air Theatre for the 2013 season and we are delighted with this week’s announcement.
“Status Quo is a legendary rock band and as well as being a big pull for local residents, the band will undoubtedly attract many visitors to the area.
“We have seen in previous years how local tourism businesses have directly and indirectly benefited from events at the theatre and we look forward to seeing the ripple effect continue throughout next year.”
Tickets for the event, priced at £35, will go on sale in person at The Sands offices, Peasholm Gap, North Bay, Scarborough, from 9am tomorrow, giving local residents the chance to buy tickets before general sale.
