Whitby Photographic Society has held two of its prestigious competitions.

The Lambert-Smith Trophy was for digital images on the theme of ‘Creative’ while the Peter Thornton was for prints of ‘Portraiture’.

The judge was Anthony David Baynes, the family portrait photographer from Goathland.

Before judging he said that photography had been part of his life for 60 years and any chance to see more was a big thrill.

He added that when he was invited to a club or society it gave him a massive opportunity to see images created by photographers just starting out, through to ones who had as much or more experience than himself.

The images for the Lambert-Smith Trophy covered a range of subjects, showing imaginative use of the word ‘creative’.

Some of the images made the judge chuckle, others put everyday items to a creative use, while others showed the use of filters in editing software.

Mr Baynes told members not to be frightened of experimenting as some images could have been improved in that way.

The winner was Richard Day with his entrant, Leaf Day.

The runner-up was Hen Knife, by Richard Day and highly commended entrants were Friendly Dragon and Whirlpool by Don Readman and Flowers Magnified by Mick Robinson.

Mr Baynes said that entrants for the Peter Thornton Trophy had some good strong images.

He felt expression was more important than the overall quality and he was in favour of cropping to highlight the face.

The winner was Karim by Sid Weatherill.

‘Stoop’ Bob by John Agar was the runner-up, while Caren and Edith by Richard Day and Rachel by Carol Walker were also highly commended.

The winning images can be seen on the society’s website at www.whitbyphotographicsociety.org
