Seoul music for gothic crowd
A TROUPE of dancing goths have started their own craze with a parody of the world-famous ‘Gangnam Style’ pop song.
The video, named Whitby Gothic Style, was filmed at the most recent goth weekend and has already received over 170,000 views from all over the globe.
The parody was the brainchild of ‘Psy-a-like’ singer Graeme Cooke, who said he had the idea prior to the festival and got together with a group of friends at the weekend to film it. He explained: “Our intention in doing this was to make a silly parody to amuse our friends. If I’d known it’d be seen by so many people then I might have had some more worthy motive, but it really was just done to have a bit of fun.”
It was filmed and edited by video journalist Tim Sinister, who said: “Graeme approached me about providing the filming. As he says there wasn’t any attempt at choreography, but I think it works. If we’d tried too hard, it probably wouldn’t be as funny.”
The video hasn’t yet reached the dizzy heights of the almost one billion views received by South Korean pop star Psy’s original Gangnam Style video, but the filmmakers say they are delighted with the great feedback they’ve received. Tim added: “I’m surprised. I hoped it would make the goths laugh, well some of them anyway. If the people of Whitby are enjoying it too, that’s great. And thanks for letting us invade your town for all these years. This is our way of celebrating how much of a good time we have in Whitby.”
With lines such as ‘Here’s some Cybers, they’re wearing goggles... These are some steampunks, also got goggles’, watchers have suggested the video could be used to build bridges between the divided gothic community. However, Tim said this was not their intention, adding: “You can’t bring goths together, any more than you can herd cats. As for deciding if steampunk or cyber is ‘real goth’, I’ll leave that to people squabbling in Facebook groups. Arguing about ‘what is goth’ is almost a tradition now, and it’s as old as the scene itself.”
Graeme added: “Joking or not, I certainly wouldn’t recommend this video as a manual for what goth actually is. Ask ten goths what Goth is and you’ll get 11 different answers. If you want to know what goth is, the best thing to do is to come to a festival like Whitby and talk to as many people as possible, go to the events and see the bands, which will allow you to develop your own opinion on the subject.”
