Oscar Wilde’s trivial comedy for serious people

Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy The Importance of Being Earnest is showing at Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre this Christmas.

Directed by Chris Monks, the play begins in a refined Victorian bachelor flat where trouble is brewing.

Jack is in love with Gwendolen.

Algernon is in love with Cecily.

But Gwendolen and Cecily are both in love with Ernest, who in fact does not exist.

In a tangle of identity and wordplay, the lovers also face the indomitable force of Lady Bracknell.

Becky Hindley, best known for her role as Charlotte Hoyle in Coronation Street, will take on the role of Lady Bracknell.

She said: “The iconic role with the dreaded line.

“Playing Lady Bracknell is a bit daunting but very exciting.

“These parts only come your way once if you’re lucky so you must grab them with both hands.

A funny play with great characters and wonderful lines – bliss.”

Joining her in the cast are: Simon Bubb (War Horse, National Theatre & West End), Naomi Cranston (Anne Boleyn, Shakespeare’s Globe), Charlie Hollway (BBC’s Doctors) and Beth Park (Bus Stop, New Vic & SJT).

And completing the line up are Howard Gossington, Maria Gough and Paul Ryan, all of whom are currently appearing alongside Becky Hindley in Cinderella at the SJT.

The Importance of Being Earnest premiered in 1895 and is Oscar Wilde’s most popular play.

Full of sparkling wit, provocative remarks and satirical humour.

The production runs from 18 December until 5 January.

Tickets cost between £10 and £24.50 and can be booked by calling the box office on (01723) 370541 or online at www.sjt.uk.com
