Libraries to lose 36 jobs

NORTH Yorkshire County Council has published a plan to maintain a “vibrant and successful” public library service across North Yorkshire, despite the news that 36 jobs – about one- fifth of the library workforce – are set to be cut.

The library service currently has the equivalent of 177 full-time posts and needs to cut £1.7m from its budget, but in a plan published on Wednesday, the authority remains confident that standards can be upheld.

The individual reductions in hours per library have not yet been decided but will be calculated according to usage and location.

Communities around North Yorkshire are also being praised for the work they have done in response to the financial challenges imposed on the county council.

County councillor Chris Metcalfe, executive members for libraries, said: “We have listened to what people have said about how they want to become involved in the provision of this service, we have examined the proposals they have put forward for achieving those aims and I’m delighted to say that the result is a set of proposals designed to ensure a viable and sustainable future for our libraries.”

The county council has already introduced a “supermobile” library service, offering facilities including internet access.

In addition, the Home Library Service, in which volunteers deliver books and other library items to people who have difficulty leaving their homes, is being extended.
