AN ART group with a twist has started up in town using an Alice in Wonderland themed tea room and its hoard of artefacts as inspiration.

Decadent Drawing so far features a group of creative, like-minded people with an interest in various forms of art.

As well as using the array of items on display at La Rosa on the West Cliff as subject material there will be themed nights with models dressed in historical costumes and burlesque, goth and pirate themed outfits.

It was started by Elaine Edmunds, a former mental health nurse, who relocated to Whitby in 2011 to focus on my own art practice.

She said: “I have got to know some wonderful creative people here, artists, craftsmen, costumiers, designers working in many different ways. There seems to be a lot of enthusiasm for new art projects at the moment in Whitby and an interest in artists collaborating with local businesses.”

Elaine has picked up on an idea already being tried out elsewhere in the country.

She added: “I am aware of a number of ‘alternative’ initiatives over the country where people can meet informally and convivially in an unusual setting, draw and get creative together, with the aim of encouraging anyone with an interest in art whatever their skills to come along and join in - much less intimidating than an art class and hopefully fun. Already there has been a lot of interest expressed in our ideas.”

The first session is Wednesday 6 February, 7.30pm-9.30pm.
