Cannes winner on at Coliseum

This 2010 winner of the Best Film Award at the Cannes Film Festival and an award for the Best Foreign Film from the London Film Critics is a highlight of this year’s Whitby Film Society programme.

In the film Of Gods and Men (15) – French – eight French Christian monks live in harmony with their Muslim brothers in a monastery perched in the mountains of North Africa in the 1990s.

They provide a free outpatient clinic for local villagers and the two communities have a quiet supportive respect for each other’s traditions.

However, when a crew of foreign workers is massacred by an Islamic fundamentalist group, fear sweeps though the region.

The army offers them protection, but the monks refuse. Should they leave?

“A stunningly passionate and deeply moving film” raved a review in The Guardian.

Of Gods and Men shows at Whitby Coliseum on Thursday, 7.45pm, admission £5. All welcome.
